Chapter 13

Emily

I woke up to my cell phone ringing. I had gotten so good about shutting it off and the one time I didn’t is when someone calls. Of course! I picked it up and squinted my eyes from the brightness of the screen. I couldn’t even make out the name, but I answered it anyway.

“What?” I mumbled.

“Why are you calling my sister and having her do potentially dangerous things?”

“What? Who the fuck is this?” I glanced at the clock that was on the shelves that divided my room. 2:49 a.m.

“It’s Lian.”

“Now, why are you yelling at me at three o’clock in the morning?”

“Because you asked my sister to look for Kate. She’s fourteen, Emily. She should not be sneaking into the dungeons. She’s impressionable and she likes you. She’d probably jump off the top of the stronghold if you told her to.”

I rolled over on my side. “What am I supposed to do, Lian? I’m just trying to locate my aunt.”

“You could call me,” he suggested.

“Ha! Last time I asked you about Kate you were less than helpful.”

“Next time you need something just call me.”

“So you can be an asshole and not give me a straight answer? I’ll pass.”

“Emily…”

“I don’t need your help,” I spat.

“Fine. You’re right. You don’t.” He let out a frustrated sigh and took a deep breath. Even over the phone I was wearing on him. Go me!

“Where are you?” he asked in a calmer tone.

“The lake house,” I whispered.

“You in bed?” he asked.

“Yes. Does that bring back some fond memories of the last time you were in this bed?”

He chuckled. “I think the memories after are more unforgettable. Let’s see, you threw my clothes out of the house, used pulso morsus AND pyromancy on me, then left me standing ten miles outside of town in the pouring rain wearing a towel. It was never a dull moment when I was with you.”

I didn’t like where this was headed, so I changed the subject completely. “So, how’s life in that massive prison?” I asked.

“Honestly, it sucks. I haven’t felt the sun on my skin since I stepped through those front doors,” he said. “Kinda makes me miss the beach.”

“What made you decide to come here?” I blurted out.

He paused for a moment. I’m sure that random question threw him off. “You want the Talyrian answer or the Corlissian answer?” he asked.

“Neither. I want the truth from you for once.”

“Emily, I did not lie…”

“I think you came into my life to teach me that it’s okay to let people go. If they really wanted to stay, they would. That’s what you taught me, Lian.”

“Emily, I didn’t want to…”

Call ended.

I sat up in bed and tossed the phone down on my comforter. I felt the hot sting of tears in my eyes and tried to wipe them away before they spilled down my cheeks. I failed miserably.

My cell rang again. I saw his name pop up on the screen this time. I wasn’t raised to be a chicken shit and hide from my enemies.
